How to Use the Caravan Towing Weight Calculator: UK Guide
Calculating your caravan towing weight properly keeps you legal and safe on UK roads. Follow these simple steps:
1. Find Your Vehicle's Kerb Weight
Check your vehicle's handbook for the exact kerb weight - this is the empty weight with all fluids but no passengers or luggage. Never guess this number.
2. Know Your Caravan's MTPLM
Look for the Maximum Technically Permissible Laden Mass plate on your caravan. This is the fully loaded weight limit set by the manufacturer.
3. Add Extra Load
Include everything you'll carry in both vehicle and caravan - food, gas bottles, water, and personal items. An average family adds 150-300kg.
4. Understand the 85% Rule
While not law, the Caravan Club recommends beginners keep caravan weight under 85% of the car's kerb weight. Our calculator shows this clearly in green/red warnings.
5. Check License Restrictions
If you passed your test after 1997, you're limited to 3,500kg total (car + caravan). Need to tow heavier? You'll need B+E entitlement through additional testing.
6. Review the Results
Our tool gives three key outputs:
- Towing Ratio: Percentage of car weight used
- Legal Status: Immediate license compliance check
- Safety Advice: Based on industry best practices
Remember: Always stay below your vehicle's stated towing capacity and never exceed the caravan's MTPLM. Adjust your load distribution if you're close to limits, and consider professional weight checks at a public weighbridge.
