Perth Towing Calculator, Built for Travellers and Local Drivers Alike
Perth asks two very different questions depending on who you are. A local whose car got clipped on the Kwinana Freeway wants to know if the tow truck driver is overcharging them, and since January 2025 that's actually a legal question with a real answer. A traveller whose 4WD dropped a wheel bearing four hours north of Meekatharra wants to know something else entirely: how far is the nearest truck, and what is this about to cost. This calculator handles both, because pretending a Perth metro tow and an outback recovery are the same maths has never made sense.

Why Perth's Rules Aren't the Same as Everyone Else's
Western Australia only just caught up to Victoria on this front. The Towing Services Act 2024 and its regulations took effect on 10 January 2025, and they cap what a towing operator can charge for towing a crashed light vehicle, but only inside the Perth and Peel regions. The structure is genuinely different from the eastern states, though. Where Melbourne's regulated scheme bundles the first 8km into its base fee, Perth's cap covers a far more generous first 50km, which makes sense once you look at a map of how spread out this city actually is. Beyond that first 50km, an extra per-kilometre rate applies, along with a flat one-off after-hours surcharge rather than a percentage loading, and a separate capped admin fee charged when the vehicle is released. Outside Perth and Peel, and for anything that isn't a crash, WA doesn't set a number. The law only requires the charge be reasonable, which is a much harder thing to dispute after the fact.
Local Mode: What Each Line Item Means
| 1 | Base fee. Covers loading, transport, unloading, and paperwork for the first 50km, and only applies to a genuine crash tow of a light vehicle inside Perth or Peel. |
| 2 | Extra distance. Charged per kilometre only once you're past that first 50km, which most metro tows never reach. |
| 3 | After-hours surcharge. A single flat one-off amount, not a percentage, and it applies on weekends, public holidays, and weeknights between 5pm and 8am. |
| 4 | Storage, admin, and salvage. Daily storage is capped at a low rate, a separate one-off admin fee applies when you collect the vehicle, and a salvage or extra-loading charge can only be added if loading genuinely took longer than 30 minutes. |
Travel Mode: How Far Is Too Far
Perth's south west feels normal by Australian standards, servos every hour or so, phone reception most of the way, more than one towing company within cooee. Head north past Geraldton or out past Kalgoorlie and that changes fast. Fewer operators cover those routes, trucks often have to drive hours just to reach you before the tow even starts, and that gets reflected in a call-out fee and a per-kilometre rate well above anything you'd see in the metro area. This calculator groups WA's common routes into four rough remoteness tiers, near Perth, regional, remote, and outback, and adjusts the estimate accordingly. It's not a quote, remote recovery is genuinely priced job by job, but it will stop you from budgeting a Broome breakdown like it's a Fremantle one.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is towing really price-capped in Perth?
Yes, but only for crash-related towing of light vehicles and motorcycles within the Perth and Peel regions, under the Towing Services Act 2024 and regulations that commenced 10 January 2025. Breakdowns, heavy vehicles, and anywhere outside Perth and Peel are not capped, though charges there must still be reasonable.
What's included in the capped base fee?
The base fee covers loading, transport, unloading, and paperwork for the first 50km of travel from the crash scene to the destination named on the authority-to-tow form. Extra distance beyond that is charged separately per kilometre.
How is this different from Melbourne's towing rules?
Victoria's regulated accident towing scheme only bundles the first 8km into its base fee and applies a percentage-based after-hours loading. Perth's cap includes a much larger 50km and uses a flat one-off after-hours surcharge instead.
Can a towing company add extra fees on top of the capped amount?
Only the specific items set out in the regulations, such as the after-hours surcharge, admin fee, and a salvage charge when loading takes longer than 30 minutes. Undisclosed extra fees are not permitted for a capped crash tow.
Why does remote WA towing cost so much more?
Fewer operators service remote routes, response trucks often have to travel long distances before the job even starts, and recovering a bogged or crashed vehicle far from town frequently needs specialist low-loader equipment. None of that is price-capped, it's an open market shaped by genuine scarcity.
Should I check my roadside assistance cover before a long WA trip?
It's worth it. Many roadside assistance policies cap free towing at a set distance, sometimes well short of what a genuine outback recovery requires, so confirm your policy's remote coverage limit before you head off the beaten track.
What if I'm towing a caravan or boat when I break down?
Recovering a vehicle and trailer together usually costs more than a single vehicle tow, since it often needs two trips or specialist equipment. Check your tow ball weight and compliance before you leave, a well-loaded rig is less likely to need recovery in the first place.
Do you have a fuel-economy tool for towing across Perth, Melbourne, and Sydney?
Yes, the towing MPG calculator for Perth, Melbourne and Sydney estimates how much your fuel economy drops once a trailer's hitched up, useful for budgeting long WA legs in advance.
Are there towing cost tools for other cities or countries?
Yes. The Sydney car towing cost calculator covers the same style of estimate for New South Wales, and the Canadian towing fuel calculator along with the Ontario car towing cost tool cover the North American side of the site.

Where the Numbers Come From
Reviewed by the Towing Calculator editorial team, built around the Towing Services Act 2024 and the Towing Services Regulations 2025, which introduced capped fees and maximum charges for crash towing of light vehicles in the Perth and Peel regions from 10 January 2025. Vehicle mass and dimension terminology references ISO 1176, and towbar coupling terms follow AS/NZS 4177. Remote-area recovery figures in travel mode are editable planning estimates, not quotes from any specific operator, since genuine outback recovery is priced job by job.
Capped fees are set by the WA Government and reviewed periodically. Always confirm the current schedule on the Department of Transport's website before disputing an invoice.
