1. Toyota RAV4 Trail / TRD Off-Road (2024) — 3,500 lbs

The best compact SUV for towing before Toyota went hybrid-only for 2026. The Trail and TRD trims use an advanced Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD system specifically designed to handle trailer loads. For 2026, the PHEV version picks up the baton with an identical 3,500 lb rating — and adds 52 miles of EV range. If you want a new-car buy at max small SUV capacity, the 2026 RAV4 PHEV is the only choice in this lineup.

2. Subaru Outback — 3,500 lbs

The Outback technically straddles the small/midsize line but is sold alongside compact SUVs in most configurations. It achieves its 3,500 lb rating with standard Symmetrical AWD and no special package required — the simplest path to max capacity in this segment. Flat-tow friendly and genuinely trail-capable.

3. Ford Escape — 3,500 lbs (final year 2026)

The Escape is being discontinued after 2026 — its last model year. With the tow package equipped, it matches the segment maximum. Its four powertrain options (gas, hybrid, PHEV, and EV) make it unusually versatile. If you buy a 2026 Escape for towing, the gas 2.0L EcoBoost is your best bet for consistent max ratings.

4. Subaru Forester — 3,000 lbs

The only small SUV besides the Outback to come standard with AWD across every single trim. With 3,000 lbs capacity, it handles a small boat, pop-up camper, or loaded utility trailer with ease. The 2026 model adds a new Toyota-partnered hybrid system while maintaining the same towing rating.

5. Mazda CX-50 — 3,000 lbs

The CX-50 punches above its class in towing. Its standard AWD and available 2.5L turbo (256 hp) give it more reserve power than most competitors when under load. The cabin is the most premium in the compact segment — a genuinely pleasant tow vehicle for weekend adventures.

Luxury compact SUVs are often overlooked for towing but several match or beat mainstream rivals. Most require a factory tow package option.

Note: The BMW X3 technically sits in the compact luxury segment but often exceeds the towing capacity of many midsize mainstream SUVs. If towing is a serious priority and budget allows, it is the class leader.

Subcompact SUVs are generally limited to very light towing. Most are only rated for unbraked trailers under 1,500 lbs. Do not attempt to tow a boat or camper with these vehicles without verifying your exact spec.

Always check payload first, not just towing capacity

Your door jamb sticker lists payload — not the brochure. A 350 lb tongue weight from a 3,500 lb trailer, plus two passengers and cargo, can exceed payload before you've loaded the trailer. This is the number one mistake small SUV owners make when towing.

Use a weight distribution hitch for trailers over 2,000 lbs

Small SUVs have shorter wheelbases than trucks. A heavy tongue weight causes the rear to squat and the front to lift, reducing steering control. A weight distribution hitch levels the vehicle and keeps front tires planted.

AWD is almost always required for max rating

In this chart, 18 of 25 models require AWD to reach their maximum towing figure. The FWD version of the Chevrolet Equinox, for example, drops from 1,500 lbs to 800 lbs. Always confirm which drivetrain your vehicle has before assuming you can tow the advertised maximum.

The "80% rule" matters more in small SUVs

In a full-size truck, towing at 95% of maximum is manageable. In a compact SUV, it noticeably affects braking distance, stability, and transmission temperature. For comfortable, regular towing, stay at or below 80% of your rated maximum. For a RAV4 rated at 3,500 lbs, that means a loaded trailer of 2,800 lbs or less.
