What is a towing ratio?

Towing ratio compares your loaded trailer's weight to your tow vehicle's own weight. A trailer at 50 percent of the tow vehicle's weight is a 0.5 to 1 ratio, generally comfortable. A ratio of 1 to 1 or higher is far more prone to sway regardless of the tow rating sticker.

Why isn't tow rating enough on its own?

Tow rating tells you the maximum weight a vehicle can pull, but says nothing about how that trailer behaves relative to the vehicle's own mass. A light SUV towing near its own weight can feel unstable even within its tow rating.

What towing ratio is considered safe?

There's no single legal cutoff, but under 0.5 to 1 is very comfortable, 0.5 to 0.85 to 1 is reasonable for most setups, and anything approaching 1 to 1 deserves extra caution and a weight distribution hitch.
