Towing Cost Calculator: See the Full Bill Before You Call
Tow trucks are great at one nasty surprise: the invoice. This calculator builds the whole bill line by line before you dial, from the hookup fee and per-distance rate to winching, storage, after-hours and tax. Pick your country for local currency and rates, switch between a roadside rescue and a planned trailer haul, and watch the total update as you go.

A tow price estimate that hides nothing
I have rebuilt this estimator three times since 2023. The rate ranges are pulled from motoring association surveys and real operator price sheets across several countries, then sanity checked against invoices people actually paid. If a number cannot be backed by a published rate, it does not make the cut.
The worst moment in any breakdown is not the breakdown. It is the bill that arrives afterwards, stuffed with fees nobody mentioned on the phone. A modest hookup charge somehow blooms into a number with an extra digit, and you are left squinting at line items like dolly fee and after-hours adjustment, wondering when you agreed to those. This tool exists to kill that ambush by showing you every line in advance.
Most cost estimators online stop at distance times a rate plus a base fee, which is fine until the real world adds winching, a couple of nights of storage, a holiday surcharge and tax. Ours treats each of those as its own visible line, then totals them honestly and shows you the effective cost per km so a short rescue and a long haul can be compared on the same footing. Better still, it flips into a second mode for when you are the one doing the towing, working out the fuel, tolls and overnight cost of pulling your own trailer across the map.

Cost per km
The figure that lets you tell a fair quote from a daylight robbery, whatever the distance.
The simple maths behind your towing bill
There is no wizardry here, just bookkeeping done in the open. The calculator follows the same order an honest operator does, then shows its working.
chargeable distance = total − free distance in basesubtotal = hookup + (chargeable × rate) + winch + storage + dollyadjusted = subtotal × after-hours or holiday factorgrand total = adjusted × (1 + tax)The detail people miss is that the timing surcharge usually applies to the whole job, not just the base fee, which is why a holiday call-out stings so much more than the brochure rate suggests. Spread the fixed hookup fee across more distance and the cost per km falls, which is exactly why a five mile rescue can feel pricier per mile than a hundred mile transport.
Tow vehicles built into the haul mode
Switch to trailer haul mode and pick your vehicle, so the fuel side of the estimate starts from a realistic towing economy rather than a wild guess. These are the workhorses people actually hitch trailers to worldwide.
Looking specifically at a blue oval truck before you commit to a trip? The dedicated Ford towing capacity calculator works out exactly what each F-Series and Ranger can pull, which pairs neatly with the fuel and toll figures you build here.

Our methodology: where these numbers come from
A price estimator that will not show its sources is just a number generator with confidence. Here is the backing for this one.
Operator rate surveys
Base fees and per-distance rates come from published operator price sheets and motoring association data, refreshed per country rather than copied from a single region.
Vehicle duty classes
Light, medium and heavy duty categories set the rate multiplier, because the equipment to move a motorcycle and an RV are worlds apart in cost.
SAE J2807 & J684
On the haul side, tow ratings reference J2807 and hitch classes reference J684, the same benchmarks the vehicle makers use.
ISO trailer standards
ISO 11992 and ISO 1724 cover trailer electrics, ISO 1726 covers fifth-wheel coupling. They keep the haul side technically grounded.
Fuel and tax by country
Pump prices and tax rates are set per country, so the haul fuel cost and the recovery tax line both reflect where you are, not a US default.
Real invoices
Every range is sanity checked against actual paid invoices, so the estimate sits close to what people genuinely hand over, not a theoretical figure.
Typical tow price ranges by country
Pick a country in the calculator and your rates load automatically. Here is the quick reference if you just want a ballpark. These are typical light-duty local figures in local currency, before extras, last benchmarked June 2026.

Local rates, local rules: jump to your country
This estimator prices a tow anywhere, but the legal backdrop and the going rate are local. If you want figures and regulations matched to your roads, these country tools carry the brake laws, licence rules and recovery pricing for each place, each with its own dedicated calculator.

Frequently asked questions
How much should a tow actually cost?
For a normal car on a short local run, expect a hookup fee in the region of 75 to 125 dollars plus a couple of dollars per mile, landing most local tows between 75 and 250 dollars. Once you bring in heavy duty equipment, an after-hours call-out, winching or storage, the figure climbs quickly. The calculator above turns those vague ranges into a single itemized number in your own currency.
How do I work out the cost per mile or km myself?
Multiply the per-distance rate by the chargeable distance, which is your total distance minus the free miles or km already wrapped into the hookup fee, then add the hookup fee and any extras and apply tax. To get the effective cost per km, divide that grand total by the full distance. It drops as the trip lengthens because the fixed base fee is spread thinner, which the calculator shows you directly.
Why did my two mile tow cost as much as a long one?
The hookup fee. That base charge is the same whether the truck drags you two miles or twenty, so on a tiny job it is almost the entire bill. This is why so many tows feel weirdly flat in price at the short end, and why bundling a slightly longer destination sometimes costs barely more. The effective cost per km figure in the results makes this brutally clear.
What sneaky extras inflate a towing bill?
The usual suspects are winching to drag a stuck vehicle out, storage charged for every night at the yard, a dolly fee for all-wheel-drive cars, after-hours and holiday surcharges that quietly apply to the whole job, fuel surcharges when prices jump, and local tax on top of everything. The calculator gives each one its own line so you can see the damage before you agree, not after.
Is it cheaper to tow my trailer myself or pay a transporter?
Flip to trailer haul mode and find out. It works out your fuel based on a towing-adjusted economy for your vehicle, adds tolls and any overnight stops, and gives you a real door-to-door figure. Compare that against a transporter quote from recovery mode and you have an honest side-by-side. Short hops usually favour driving it yourself, long interstate moves often favour paying a professional once you value your own time.
Do these prices work outside the United States?
Yes, that is the whole point. Choose your country and the currency, distance units, tax rate and baseline fees all switch to suit. From dollars in the States and Canada to pounds in Britain and euros across Europe, you get a figure that makes sense locally, then you fine-tune it to the operator in front of you. For country-specific legal detail, follow the links above to your local guide.
Can I save or share the estimate?
Yes. Once the bill is built you can copy it as clean text to paste into a message, or print and save it as a PDF for your records or to wave at an operator who quotes you something very different. Handy when an insurer or a relative wants to see exactly what you were quoted and why.
Is the estimate a guaranteed price?
No, and anyone promising one online is guessing. This is a well-grounded planning figure built from survey rates and real invoices, designed to get you close and to stop you being blindsided. The actual price depends on the operator, the exact pickup and drop-off, the condition of the vehicle and local rules. Always confirm the final number with the company before they hook up.
