The "towing costs 25 percent more fuel" line everyone repeats and nobody checks
Aerodynamic drag scales with the square of speed, not linearly, which means the jump from 90 to 110 km/h costs a lot more extra fuel than the same 20 km/h jump from 60 to 80 ever would. Add a boxy trailer's frontal area and a headwind on top of that, and the flat 25 percent figure people quote stops meaning much. I built this calculator to actually separate weight, shape, speed and wind into their own contributions instead of blending them into one guessed number.
Four separate things stack on top of each other once a trailer's attached: rolling resistance from the added weight, which scales roughly with mass; aerodynamic drag from the trailer's frontal shape, which scales with the square of speed; headwind, which adds directly to that effective speed before the squaring happens; and altitude or grade, which this calculator doesn't model directly but which owners on mountain routes should budget extra margin for regardless. Treating all four as one flat percentage is where the usual towing fuel estimate falls apart.
