Rivian Towing Capacity Calculator: 11,000 Pounds and the Range Math That Comes With It
Rivian didn't just build an electric truck that tows, it built one that tows better than most gas trucks on the road, with the Quad-Motor R1T hitting a genuinely class-leading 11,000 lb. The catch nobody advertises loudly is what that trailer does to your remaining range. This calculator gives you the honest tow rating and the honest range math in the same breath.

The truck that made 11,000 pounds an electric number too
Instant torque from four motors let Rivian certify a genuinely class-leading tow rating on the R1T, a number that would turn heads even from a diesel truck. What most reviews skip is the second half of that story: towing near that limit can cost you more than half your range, and that changes how you plan a trip completely differently than it would in a gas truck. I built this calculator to give both halves equal weight.
Owners after a figure specific to their own Rivian rather than a brochure average should use the Rivian towing capacity by VIN feature above, since motor configuration genuinely shifts the certified number across the R1T and R1S lineups. The R1T Quad-Motor leads the range with a genuinely class-leading 11,000 lb figure, the R1S follows with a strong three-row SUV number, the R2 carries preliminary but credible figures ahead of wider deliveries, and the R3 simply hasn't reached production certification yet, which this calculator states plainly rather than guessing at a number that doesn't exist.
Class-leading, genuinely so
Up to 11,000 lb on Quad-Motor, a figure that beats most gas-powered full-size trucks.
Three rows, real muscle
Up to 7,700 lb, a strong figure for an electric family SUV.
Preliminary but credible
Up to 6,500 lb expected, figures may shift slightly before wide deliveries ramp up.
R3 isn't ready yet
No production certification exists yet, so this calculator flags it as pending rather than inventing a number.

How the figures are worked out
SAE J2807
Ratings for the R1T, R1S and R2 with the factory tow package follow J2807 test methodology, same as any combustion truck.
VIN structure (ISO 3779)
The 17-character VIN carries WMI, VDS and VIS segments encoding model, motor configuration and equipment used to pin down your real figure.
Payload checked first
Tongue weight and cargo are weighed against payload before tow rating, since the large battery pack already eats into payload more than a comparable gas truck.
FMVSS 110
GVWR and payload definitions plus the certification label rules that apply across the current lineup.
SAE J684
Hitch class matched to trailer weight, Class IV for most setups scaling to Class V on a fully equipped Quad-Motor R1T.

What is the Rivian R1T towing capacity?
The R1T is rated to tow up to 11,000 lb on the Quad-Motor variant with the factory tow package, a genuinely class-leading figure that beats most gas-powered full-size trucks. The Dual-Motor variant carries a slightly lower figure.
Can the Rivian R1S tow a travel trailer?
Yes. The R1S is rated to tow up to 7,700 lb on properly equipped variants with the factory tow package, a strong figure for a three-row electric SUV.
How much does towing reduce a Rivian's range?
Significantly. Towing near the rated capacity can reduce real-world range by roughly 45 to 60 percent compared to unloaded driving, so planning charging stops around that reduced range matters more than on a gas truck.
Does the Rivian R3 have a towing rating yet?
Not yet. The R3 has been announced but has not entered full production or certification testing, so no manufacturer towing figure exists yet.
